Metro Birmingham Chapter NAACP Honors Youth

BIRMINGHAM—Over forty years ago thousands of youth took to the streets of Birmingham, Alabama to challenge segregation laws enforced by Eugene “Bull” Connor.   Those youth organized by the late Reverend James Luther Bevell became the force that rekindled the civil rights movement.  On May 30th in the spirit of its 100th birthday celebration, the Metro Birmingham Chapter NAACP took time to honor and remind today’s youth of the great sacrifices of many known and unknown trailblazers who made it possible for their current rights and privileges.
The “Torch Bearers and Trailblazers” Youth Achievement Awards Ceremony held at the Birmingham Museum of Art was filled with youth of various social, ethnic and religious backgrounds all but reflected a United Nation of Youth.  The youth awards included Academia/Scholarship, Arts and Culture/Entertainment, “Kneeling Ministers”Awards, Social/Community and Religion.

Tarmarc Abrams one of the recipients of the Academia/Scholarship Award was nominated by Tracey Muhammad, Founder and Executive Director of Supreme Leadership Youth Academy a non -profit black male leadership academy based in Birmingham.  Tarmarc is a junior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham majoring in Biology/Pre-Med and holds a 3.26 GPA.  When asked why he nominated Tarmarc for the award Mr. Muhammad stated, “Obviously when you look at Tarmarc’s GPA nominating him was a no brainer.  However, his GPA alone was not the deciding factor for me because we have many “intellectual giants” who have been self serving and unfortunately toxic assets to the detriment of the American educational, political, economic and religious systems.  Tarmarc has a quiet servant leadership spirit that allows him to achieve his personal academic goals with the objective of serving the underserved at the core of his educational motivation.”

Mr. Muhammad concluded his remarks by saying, “Tarmarc has been involved with Supreme Leadership Youth Academy since its inception nearly three years ago and I can honestly say I haven’t had to correct him one time relative to his behavior.  Even when we traveled to Africa last summer his character remained impeccable.   More news>>
